About Rosellen Westerhoff
Rosellen is an artist who has spent a large part of her life out in nature and in the close company of animals. One of her greatest enjoyments is to convey the emotions and insights she has gained from these experiences into her artwork.
Growing up in Gunnison, Colorado, Rosellen was surrounded by the grandeur and splendor of the Colorado mountains. Therein came the enjoyment of sharing time with horses and other family pets. Her interest in art blossomed in high school, and it is here she received a Gold Medal award from Hallmark for an oil painting titled "Friends". This crystallized her passion for art and animals. Rosellen is a graduate from the Colorado Institute of Art, and a graduate of Metropolitan State University of Denver with a Bachelor of Science in Land Use/Geography. She currently lives and works out of her home/studio along the Yellowstone River east of Billings, Montana.
One of her recent achievements has been to become an associate member of the Society of Animal Artists. In 2012, her colored pencil drawing "Bellus Equus" was honored with the Director's Award for the Ex Arte Equinus 5 International Equine Art Exhibition and is published in the 2011-2012 Art Horse Magazine and Book. Her colored pencil drawing "Watching", was juried into the Colored Pencil Society of America Explore This! in 2007, was featured on the cover of the 2008 Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and appeared on the March 2011 cover of Color Pencil Magazine. Rosellen has displayed works at the Montana Interpretations show, the United Kingdom Coloured Pencil Society International Annual Exhibition, the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park Fine Art Gallery "Wild Horses, Wild Lands" Exhibit, and the American Academy of Equine Art Annual Fall juried show.
Another way Rosellen has expressed her love of animals has been to illustrate the children's book, "Gaddy and Greymouse", using colored pencil and gouache, and most recently completing illustrations for a second book, "Tiffany and Tyler", using acrylics.
Rosellen finishes her art with her trademark "RIG" which reflects her maiden name, something that she has been doing since high school. If Rosellen is not in her studio she is spending time with her family and her K-9, feline and equine companions; and during the summer in one of her many gardens of flowers and other decorative plants.
